This Wednesday I decided to go check out The Power Plant’s International Lecture Series featuring Swiss-artist Thomas Hirschhorn. My day started out as it usually does when I plan to go to an art event. I sit at my desk and think of every conceivable excuse not to go; laundry, grocery shopping, headache, I even threw in grant writing for good measure. However, the excuse that weighed in most was this: I didn’t want to be disappointed again. The thought of sitting through 40 slides of cardboard with the inevitable verdict that “my art is/was/can save the world” seemed too much. That said, I went, if not to prove myself wrong.

Philippe Blanchard and Luke Painter
Exhibition Opening May 7th, 7-10pm.
With separate art practices Philippe Blanchard and Luke Painter come together at 47 in the exhibition Ancestral Vision.
Luke Painter and Philippe Blanchard’s work with projection shares an interest in questioning the historical origins of contemporary forms of popular expression. Their hybrid practices strive to initiate a dialog (or is it a conference call?) between the disciplines of animation, installation and architecture and conceptually between historical periods. Animation is expanded through the use of installation, and is treated as a unique experience that is anchored by the exhibition space. This exhibition features two installations:

Introduction
Hi everyone, I would like to share the results of a skype interview I was fortunate enough to have with modern-day storyteller Daniel Barrow. Barrow currently has a solo exhibition at the AGYU titled Emotional Feelings. The exhibition opened March 31st and closes on June 6.
The gallery space contains both digital and analog projectors. Each viewed image is made of multiple projected images arranged to register as one. Viewers are invited to interact manually with each work.
The Interview
Selena L. Lee: Looking at your previous work, you have incorporated books, performance, video and interactive installation. How do these play a role in your artist’s practice?
Daniel Barrow: My primary practice is performance and then I like to make videos and films and I’ve always wanted to make a comic book. Periodically I am asked by various galleries to install work in a space. Which is exciting to me but I guess primarily I am a storyteller. Most of my ideas relate to storytelling.

Pretty Ugly is the critique of aesthetic judgment; the interconnectedness of Art, Media and Design; the rain on your parade; the definition, limitation, and possibility across disciplines; the abject, the beautiful, the tactile, the patterned, the provocative, the theoretical, the suggestion of something else.

Part One: Start.
I suppose a brief introduction is in order… My name is Justine. I play in a noisy band called The Love and Terror Cult. We have been playing shows since 2005, so I have seen a fair share of local bands doing their thing.
I want to be as objective as possible. Music is so taste driven and personal. Just because I like chicken doesn’t mean it’s good. Maybe you prefer beef. Point being, I would rather be objective, leaving out slanted adjectives such as “yummy” or “crap”. I will be revealing to you the meat and veggie selection of each meal; you can have a taste later and see if you like it. Obviously my opinion will somewhat saturate my coverage, but I will try and be mild spice! I will leave the most room for the artists themselves to describe their music in however much detail they choose to offer.
Here are my words describing one night spent at two shows in two cities.

Daniel Barrow is kickstarting Images Festival with Emotional Feelings on March 31st at the AGYU (located in the Accolade East Building on York Campus, 4700 Keele Street Toronto). In his practice, Barrow has combined obsolete media technology with drawing and collecting. This exhibition explores themes of dualism and incorporates interactive media with performance. The event runs from 6-9pm.
For those living downtown, there is a free performance bus that leaves OCAD on March 31st at 6pm, and returns at 9pm sharp. The ride is an artwork itself, featuring artist Allyson Mitchell who considers herself a maximalist artist (I had to google “maximalist”: it has something to do with obsessive, complex, and exhibitionist collections and accumulations). Mitchell uses feminism and pop-culture to explore ideas about sexual identity, autobiography and the body.
