Philippe Blanchard and Luke Painter
Exhibition Opening May 7th, 7-10pm.

With separate art practices Philippe Blanchard and Luke Painter come together at 47 in the exhibition Ancestral Vision.

Luke Painter and Philippe Blanchard’s work with projection shares an interest in questioning the historical origins of contemporary forms of popular expression. Their hybrid practices strive to initiate a dialog (or is it a conference call?) between the disciplines of animation, installation and architecture and conceptually between historical periods. Animation is expanded through the use of installation, and is treated as a unique experience that is anchored by the exhibition space. This exhibition features two installations:

Quest for Fire is the result of Philippe Blanchard’s recent research into the history of animation and the moving image. Wanting to expand beyond the single-channel video format, Blanchard has been using installation and live performance as means of reflecting on how animation functions in today’s visual culture. A wall mounted mural piece is activated by synchronized rock-show lighting. Strobing patterns of coloured light interact with the coloured ink, the work becomes simultaneously still and moving. The imagery in the mural explores fire as a metaphor for the human fascination with light and energy. The control over fire is represented as a primordial technological impulse which the artist connects to the pervasiveness of moving imagery in contemporary culture.

From Victorian to Modernism to What? This installation by Luke Painter projects animated works that reflect on the compulsion to personally connect with (and often transform) the architecture of our surroundings. Over the past year Painter and his father have been building a scale model of a Victorian house from a neighbourhood past. Approximately 8’ tall and heavily ornamented, the structure is too small to be a real house and too large to be a dollhouse. On the rear wall of the building, two eyes made from stained glass project animations depicting architectural sites specific to Toronto that have personal resonance with Painter and that nod to the transitioning nature of neighbourhoods in the city.

Both installations harken back to the early days of the moving image and offer a reflection on the potential connections between historical periods, while humourously engaging the viewer.

47 is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 – 5 p.m or by appointment.

Butcher Gallery is accepting submissions of video and performance for a curated video installation! Submissions are due Friday April 23, 2010 at 11:59 p.m., for presentation at the gallery in early summer.

We are looking for video submissions pertaining to themes of trash, desire, destruction, domination and communion in sexy, violent, video (art) made for the Internet or inspired by it. Live performances, performance in front of projection, or performance on video are all welcome. Guest curator, Jennifer Chan will disgorge the selected submissions in a mash up projection installation. Submissions need not be overtly sexy or violent and can be found footage, documentary, animation, violence to or against images, fetishistic…etc.

We are calling for submissions from emerging artists, graduating students, recent graduates, and vloggers. This one night screening provides artists and non-artists, amateur producers, performers and/or web geeks with an alternative exhibition experience.

Accepted artists must consent to their work being remixed, mashed, looped, and effectively hacked apart to pieces by curator Jennifer Chan. High quality .mov files or DV video and stills should be available for accepted submissions. Butcher will provide technical assistance where possible and basic audio/video equipment for live performance (see equipment list).

We welcome submissions from outside of Toronto, but please note that Butcher Gallery cannot provide curator or artist fees, travel fees, or cover the transporting or insurance of artwork—although we wish we could.

All submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee of emerging artists and relevant professionals.

All submissions must include:
- Name
- Contact information: 1) E-mail (our primary mode of communication) 2) Phone number
- title and video via URL link to hosted video, or compressed .mov or h264 video files.
- Performance: video documentation and/or project description (250 words max)

Optional, but not necessary:
- artist statement (1 page)
- current C.V.
- website URL

For performance proposals: please include:
1) list of materials provided by the artist, including any software and audio-visual equipment
2) supplementary documentation of proposed work (DVD is preferred, however, URL links or JPG images are also accepted)
3) duration

Please send all questions and submissions to videobattle(at)butchergallery.com with title “Video submission” or “Performance submission”

Curator bio:
Jennifer Chan is an artist-curator specializing in Visual Culture & Communication at University of Toronto Misssissauga/Sheridan College. She has curated for Vtape and InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre and now assists with programming for Gendai Gallery. Jennifer is a recipient of the 2009 Trinity Square Video Award and 2008 Mississauga Arts Awards for Emerging Talent in Visual Arts. She has exhibited at VMAC, Nuit Blanche and Gallery 1313.

Butcher Gallery is an alternative presentation space in Toronto that is a proactive response to the lack of exposure of hyper-contemporary local and international emerging artists. Spurred by the rising popularity of online exhibitions, Butcher’s goal is to bring the inaccessibility and anti-tactile themes of these collections to three-dimensional reality. Traditional, as well as non-conventional exhibitions, such as lecture series, special installation projects, screenings, and curator/artist collaborations are in Butcher’s future. Founded by and under the direction of Brad Tinmouth and Lili Huston- Herterich with curatorial assistance by Kaitlin Till-Landry, Butcher Gallery is a new and refreshing departure from current art spaces in Toronto.

In early December, Chicago arts and culture blog Bad at Sports ran a series of article on the persistence of what they call “apartment galleries” (obviously galleries run out of peoples apartments and studios). These texts were mostly put together for a publication by Floorlength and Tux (who’ve made the rest of the texts available as a pdf on their website).

While it is mostly presented as a Chicago-only phenomenon (Check out this post about New York’s apartment galleries), it would appear to me that there seems to be an upswing of this type of activity in Toronto. Maybe it’s because I’ve recently graduated and I’m now seeing friends and colleagues try their hand at running a space, but it seems odd in a city as rich with artist-run centers (ARC) and galleries as Toronto. Liz Nielsen tries to explain the impulse:

I have come up with several reasons but there is one that I continually spiral back to, and that is that Chicago has very few “parent galleries”, relative to the number of artists. At risk of being cutesy, parent galleries are the commercial venues that give us artist children shelter, that help us with our homework, hang our work on the refrigerator, talk us up like crazy, send us to art camps/residencies, and above all help us grow into the artists that we are capable of becoming. As it stands, hundreds of art students are pumped out of our schools in Chicago every year — and these are great schools — only to be orphaned with nowhere to show, nowhere to go.

So we parent ourselves.

Judging by recent activities in Toronto (Jamie’s Area, Double Double Land, Butcher Gallery, 107 Shaw, etc) young Toronto artist seem firmly affixed to this no man’s land; orphaned by art school but not quite ready for ARC life. There are other issues at stake here in Toronto, which we can get into in another post, but for now lets see how our neighbours in the windy city do it.

Some people may have noticed a new section appear on the XPACE website over the summer. XWEB is our semi-new project in which we feature web-based art and design on our homepage.

Our first project was Benjamin Bruneau’s Every Wall Drawing #146, a re-imagining of a instructional work by Sol Lewitt. This month XWEB features Brad Tinmouths Youtube Party.

We’ll be bringing you more projects over the next few months, and will be accepting submissions on an ongoing basis. Our goal is to respond to dynamic practices within our community. This now includes the internet.

And of course, XWEB is always looking for submissions from emerging artists and designers doing exciting things on the internet. We will accept work in pretty much any form with the condition that it be able to be viewed in a browser. This includes videos, jpgs, youtube embeds, php scripts, html experiments and pretty much anything else you could think of. If you would like to submit email your information and a link to matthew@xpace.info
