Summer employment opportunity for Arts, Design or Arts Administration students to gain practical experience in a contemporary art gallery in downtown Toronto.  Candidates who possess an enthusiasm to learn within a creative and challenging environment are encouraged to apply.

GALLERY ASSISTANT (3 POSITIONS)

Employment Term: May through August 2009 (maximum 16 Weeks)

Wage: $11 per hour, 30 hours per week

Gallery TPW has created three summer employment opportunities for students enrolled in Fine Arts or Arts Administration programs.  Gallery Assistant positions are available with a focus in the following areas:

GALLERY ASSISTANT – DIGITAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE

The successful candidate will work closely with the Communication Coordinator to archive digital content, update the website and maintain an inventory of visual images to promote the gallery, exhibitions and programs. Some physical work will also be required during installation and striking.

Required qualifications include:

• A strong knowledge of contemporary art

• Knowledge and experience using creative computer applications including Adobe Creative Suite,• Proficient in HTML and CSS

• Knowledge and experience using social networking tools such as twitter and facebook

• Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills

• Experience using a Content Management System such Joomla and video editing software considered an asset

• Experience with Apple computer systems and basic office programs including database software, spreadsheets and word processing programs

• Educational background in visual arts or arts administration

GALLERY ASSISTANT – ADMINISTRATION AND OUTREACH

The successful candidate will work closely with the Gallery Coordinator to provide support for projects related to fundraising, outreach initiatives, liaising with the public, coordinating special events and office administration. Some physical work will also be required during installation and striking.

Required qualifications include:

• A strong knowledge of contemporary art

• Strong research skills• Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills• Knowledge of Filemaker Pro or other database programs• Excellent written and oral communication skills• Experience with Apple computer systems and basic office programs including database software, spreadsheets and word processing programs• Educational background in visual arts or arts administration

GALLERY ASSISTANT – INSTALLATION AND EXHIBITION TECHNICIAN

The successful candidate will work closely with the Curator, Gallery Staff and Artists to provide installation and technical support for exhibitions, events, and fundraisers.  The Gallery Assistant will also create an inventory of technical equipment and tools, provide technical research for upcoming exhibitions and prep the gallery for the fall season. This position will require physical work.

Required qualifications include:

• A strong knowledge of contemporary art

• Experience painting, handling artwork, installing artwork

• Experience preparing gallery walls and painting

• Experience building considered an asset

• Skills and experience with new media and video installations

• Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills

• Ability to research and solve technical problems independently

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Experience with Apple computer systems and basic office programs including database software, spreadsheets and word processing programs

• Educational background in visual arts or arts administration

Hours will typically be 4 days a week Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am – 5 pm. Occasional evenings as required.

Eligibility:

These Summer Work Experience positions are funded by Canadian Museums Association (Summer Jobs) through the Young Canada Works Program to provide career-related employment for emerging cultural workers. To participate in this Summer Work Experience, the participant must meet the eligibility requirements outline on the Young Canada Works website at http://www.pch.gc.ca/ycw-jct/info-ppts/101-eng.cfm. You are eligible if you:

  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
    Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you have been approved;
  • are registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
  • have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job;
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
